When choosing a wedding venue, it’s worth looking beyond how it looks. The best venue is one that suits your vision, guest experience, and budget.
Here are the main things to consider:
Capacity – Can it comfortably accommodate your guest list for both the ceremony and reception?
Location – Is it easy for guests to find, with good transport links and nearby accommodation?
Style and atmosphere – Does it match the theme you’re aiming for (elegant, rustic, modern, country house, industrial, etc.)?
Licensed for ceremonies – If you want your ceremony and reception in one place, ensure it’s licensed for civil marriages.
Catering – Does the venue provide in-house catering, or can you bring your own caterer?
Ask to sample the food.
Cost and value – Understand what’s included in the hire fee, such as furniture, staffing, tableware, and décor.
Availability – Is your preferred date available, and do they offer flexibility?
Outdoor space – Ideal for photographs, drinks receptions, or outdoor ceremonies if weather permits.
Accessibility – Make sure it’s suitable for elderly guests and those with mobility needs.
Parking – Is there enough on-site parking or nearby parking?
Accommodation – Are there rooms for the couple and guests, or hotels nearby?
Experienced events team – A knowledgeable wedding coordinator can make planning and the day itself much smoother.
Restrictions – Check finishing times, noise limits, décor rules, and any supplier restrictions.
Reviews and reputation – Read recent reviews and, if possible, visit during a live wedding or open day.
If you’re viewing venues, ask questions such as:
What’s included in the hire price?
Are there any hidden costs?
Who will coordinate the wedding on the day?
What happens if the weather is poor?
Can we use our own suppliers?
How many weddings do you host each day?
As an experienced events manager, I’d also pay close attention to how organised the venue team is. Clear communication, attention to detail, and a well-managed operation often make the biggest difference to how smoothly a wedding runs.
