How to Motivate Catering Staff

Motivating a catering team starts with creating an environment where people feel valued, supported, and proud of their work. In a fast-paced hospitality setting, good leadership can have a major impact on morale and performance.

Here are some effective ways to motivate catering teams:

Lead by example – Be punctual, professional, positive, and willing to help during busy periods.

Communicate clearly – Hold concise pre-shift briefings so everyone understands the event, menu, timings, and expectations.

Recognise great work – Thank team members personally and celebrate excellent customer feedback or outstanding performance.

Provide training – Invest in service skills, food knowledge, wine service, and customer care to build confidence.

Empower staff – Give team members responsibility and trust them to make appropriate decisions for guests.

Create a positive culture – Encourage teamwork, respect, and open communication where everyone feels included.

Set achievable goals – For example, delivering a flawless service, achieving excellent guest feedback, or improving service speed.

Give constructive feedback – Praise publicly where appropriate, and coach privately when improvements are needed.

Support wellbeing – Ensure adequate breaks, refreshments, and fair rotas, especially during long events.

Celebrate success – After a successful event, thank the team and share positive feedback from clients or guests.

A simple motivational message before service could be:
“Today’s event is an opportunity to create memorable experiences for our guests.

Every smile, every interaction, and every detail matters. Let’s work together, support one another, and deliver exceptional service that we’re proud of. Thank you for your hard work—let’s have a great service.”

The most consistently motivated catering teams have leaders who are visible, approachable, fair, and who regularly recognise the effort behind excellent service. This builds trust, confidence, and a strong team culture.
